The Piña Colada, a quintessential symbol of the tropics, is a beloved cocktail millions worldwide enjoy. But where did this creamy, coconut-flavored drink originate?

While there are a few competing claims, most agree that the tropical cocktail’s roots lie in Puerto Rico. One popular story credits Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, with creating the it in 1954. Tasked with developing a signature drink to attract tourists, Marrero experimented with various ingredients until he perfected the now-famous combination of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice.

Another contender for the title of Piña Colada creator is Ramón Portas Mingot, who worked at the Barrachina Restaurant in Old San Juan. According to this version, Mingot concocted the drink in the 1960s, and the restaurant claims to be the birthplace of the creamy tropical cocktail.

Regardless of its origins, this creamy tropical cocktail has become an iconic symbol of Puerto Rico, and in 1978, it was officially declared the island’s national drink.

What’s in a Name?

The name “Piña Colada” is a combination of two Spanish words: “piña,” meaning pineapple, and “colada,” which translates to “strained” or “filtered.” This likely refers to the drink’s smooth and creamy texture.

A Global Sensation

The drink’s popularity has exploded far beyond the shores of Puerto Rico. It’s a staple on tropical vacation menus, and it’s enjoyed year-round in countless bars and homes worldwide. The drink’s versatility has also led to countless variations, with bartenders experimenting with different types of rum, coconut cream, and even adding fruit or other flavorings.
